The winners of the contest of applied research

26.09.2022

The winner of the contest of applied research 2022 has revealed. This year, 13 applications were submitted from different UAS. Evaluation committee elected three best researches of the contest of applied researches.

The winner is Sven-Erik Mändmaa (Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences) with the thesis “The creation of a training set for traffic sign detection systems based on machine learning models for vehicles developed by Cleveron Mobility”.

Cleveron Mobility is developing a driver assistance system for its autonomous robot couriers. The driver assistance system will have the ability to detect traffic signs with its traffic sign detection system. Cleveron Mobility will develop the traffic sign detection system in-house using machine learning and computer vision. Currently there is no suitable dataset to train the machine learning models for the task. The aim of this thesis is a dataset suitable for training the computer vision models for detecting traffic signs and a process to continuously develop the dataset.

The committee also recognized with a scholarship Sergei Kuzmin (TTK UAS) thesis “The vibration tests of the ESTCube-2 satellite avionics module engineering model“ that provides an overview of vibration testing of CubeSats, using the ESTCube-2 satellite as an example and Ingrid Roosileht (Estonian Aviation Academy) thesis “Tartu airspace analysis for the establishment of unmanned aviation system test field“ that provides analyses to suggest sites for the establishment of the Tartu unmanned aviation systems test field.

In addition, the committee highlighted two researches: Eliisa Saare ja Geithy Tamme (TTK UAS) Development of a Methodology for the Ergonomic Evaluation of the Station and Protective Uniform of the Estonian Rescue Board” and Elerin Kaasik and Kethlin Visas (TTK UAS) “Textile waste mapping for organizing a more efficient production process at Wendre AS“.

The contest was carried out in collaboration with the Foundation of Estonian UAS and Tallinn Enterprise Centre.

Congratulations to the winner and all the participants!
